About StetPro
Students increasingly rely on technology to get their ideas into written form. Educators increasingly need confidence that the work submitted to them is still the student’s own. StetPro was built to support both of those needs at the same time.
We do not treat accessibility and academic integrity as opposing interests. A student who needs help expressing their work and an educator who needs to understand how it was produced are, in practice, asking for the same thing: a clear account of how the writing came about.
Why StetPro exists
Dictation has been available for a long time, and for many students it is a practical way of getting words onto the page. What has changed is everything sitting next to it. Writing tools can now draft, restructure and rephrase to a standard that makes the line between assistance and authorship difficult to see in a finished document.
That creates an awkward position for both sides. A student using legitimate assistance can end up with nothing to show that the ideas and the words were theirs. An educator, looking only at the finished document, is left trying to infer authorship from how the writing reads.
StetPro was designed around keeping that distinction visible. Speech should be a practical route into written work, and using it should not cost the student the evidence of their own authorship.
A different starting point
Most approaches to this problem begin with the finished essay and work backwards, trying to determine retrospectively how it was produced. StetPro starts at the other end, with the process itself.
The record is made while the work is being created, rather than estimated afterwards. That is not a claim that authorship can be proved absolutely, and what is retained, and who can see it, depends on how the account or institution has been configured.
Accessibility and integrity together
Assistive technology should not place a student in the position of having to defend whether their work is really theirs. That is the principle the product is built on.
Speaking can be a useful route into writing for a wide range of people, including those who:
- find typing slow or tiring
- find spelling difficult
- find handwriting difficult
- find sustained keyboard use physically difficult
- find it hard to get started with a blank page
- think more clearly out loud than on the page
StetPro is not restricted to any particular group of students, and it does not ask anyone to declare a reason for using it. The point is simply this: making work easier to express should not make its authorship harder to demonstrate.
Our approach to formatting
We think this kind of technology should have a defined job and defined boundaries. In StetPro, that job is presentation: making speech readable on the page without rewriting it, improving the argument or adding anything the student did not say. Because the original transcript is kept separately, the formatted version can always be read against it.
StetPro is meant to sit alongside the way people already work. Students export their work and carry on wherever they normally write; it does not try to become their writing environment.
